If it is to be a Land Rover then most people choose a Defender 110 3 door hard top, 5 door Station Wagon or a Double Cab Pick-up as their ideal vehicle.
If the vehicle is a 2 seater, it is well worth making it possible to accommodate 1 or 2 extra people. This can be very sociable on long trips away meeting friends or family who may fly in, or giving other travellers or locals a lift thereby gleaning some extra valuable local knowledge, and also in some game reserves in Southern Africa a local guide is compulsory.
In some instances especially if you are on a tight budget and looking for extra comfort you may consider a 300 TDI Discovery as your base vehicle. Effectively with suspension upgrades a Discovery can be adapted to do a similar job as the Defender.
Nene Overland is very focused on stocking plenty of 300 TDI Defender 110 and Discovery’s ready to be prepared for overland travel. Also bear in mind that on occasion it may be an advantage to upgrade an older vehicle as it may make your ‘carnet de passage’ cost through some countries considerably cheaper. These charges may be based on ‘book’ value of a vehicle, information officials would have access to UK book values, i.e. the newer the vehicle the more the carnet de passage would cost. The best advice we can give is always allow plenty of time to plan and research your proposed trip. Always have your vehicle ready and finished with plenty of weeks to spare before you leave and visit it at every opportunity. This will put valuable mileage on the vehicle giving opportunity to iron out any niggles, familiarise yourselves with the operation of all equipment and become more tuned into any practical maintenance that you may carry out.
Perhaps you bought the vehicle at a very attractive price, however if the vehicle requires a lot of mechanical reconditioning your cheap vehicle may soon become a very expensive vehicle! In the long term it would possibly make more sense to let Nene Overland supply the vehicle and do the preparation work as a complete package. A one stop shop can take the worry out of your vehicle purchase, it will also make the end result come together so much better as one company is in control of the quality, rather than two or more. Nene has specialised and traded in this market since 1988 and is run by passionate enthusiasts to give the customer the absolute best and most sincere advice!
We are true professionals in our field.

We will advise to fit equipment or carry out work that would be cost effective and create a practical purposeful purchase, right for the customer and the environment you wish to travel through. Don’t forget you can visit Nene Overland and see it all from start to finish a vast stock of quality vehicles, all the equipment – Oz Tents, Roof Tents and Racks undercover. You will be able to compare the Hannibal and Autohome Roof Tents. For bests advice and demonstrations please book appointments with Kevin Mackman
Although many of the pieces of equipment that we fit to overland prepared vehicles are the same type, each vehicle is built for the individual customer after discussing where they are going, how long they are travelling and what they expect from there ‘home’ on wheels during there trip. After all you have to live with it for many months so your input is invaluable.
Depending on the length of your trip we can build the vehicle that suits your needs, whether you need long range fuel tanks and water storage and filtration, essential in many parts of the world,we can build most things to make your trip enjoyable.
Suspension is also a vital part of a successful build, too soft and the vehicle will not cope with all your extra equipment in challenging terrain, too hard and it will make the vehicle very harsh and unstable when on paved roads. This is something we have been testing for many years and with invaluable feedback from many previous customers we can get your vehicle performing correctly.
Electrics are one of the main problems that overlanders have with their vehicles so getting this right at the outset will save valuable time and money further down the road.
All our electrics are carefully planned and executed, with everything soldered and heatshrunk, separate fusebox for all auxiliary items such as winch, power sockets, invertors for your laptops and worklamps.
We recommend a Dual Battery management system and Gel batteries to cope with all the extra items fitted, this will then monitor the charging system and make sure that your main starter battery always has a full charge no matter what is being used from your secondary battery.
Refrigaration is also an important part of making your adventure enjoyable,we recommend National Luna fridges as they are built to withstand the rigours of overland travel and can easily cope with very high ambient temperatures while still keeping the Gin & Tonic chilled.
Packing everything securely is also an area that is not always planned correctly. We can supply secure lockable drawer systems for the rear of the vehicle as well as our heavy duty Wolf packing boxes, secured with aircraft rail so there is no movement of your items either in shipping or while travelling, also one of our lockable cubby boxes to hide away your stereo and small items.
Although we try and keep the centre of gravity as low as possible, sometimes it is necessary to put roofracks and rooftents on the vehicle. We are the UK agents for the Hannibal range of racks, tents and awnings.
We stock racks to fit all Land Rover vehicles and many of the Japanese vehicles and the tents will fit all the racks.
To make your trip more enjoyable we can also fit the Hannibal side awning to the rack, great for sitting under away from the blazing sun(not the UK!)or the rainy season, perfect for your evening meal watching the sun go down.
We can also put together a spares package containing anything that we consider might be needed on your trip, hopefully you will never need it.
So when you are on your adventure and you need any spare part that is not available locally, we are here on the phone and email to help.We can quickly ship any part you would need to get you on your way again.
And if there were room in the box we would be joining you in the adventure.
Also an important part of your trip will be insurance, shipping and the most important document for many countries the Carnet de Passage,we can advise on all of this paperwork. Click on the link below to find out more information:
